Gabi's Art and Prints

01

Inspiration and Creative Process

I seek inspiration by walking in a dense evergreen forest in Lithuania, hiking by the white cliffs of the Jurassic Coast in England, or spending an afternoon in a café by Lake Michigan in Chicago. These experiences shape my artistic vision, allowing me to create colourful, lively worlds that linger between the abstract and the representational.

My mixed-media paintings are fragments of memories, often concealing emotions tied to specific places or events: joy, serenity, longing, love, or fear. In abstract interpretations of landscapes, cityscapes, and still life, colour is my primary medium for capturing moments and moods.

02

Artistic Style and Technique

Through loose brushstrokes, emphasized by precise ink-pen lines, I seek to create a sense of mystery, layered reality, and the fragile yet complex ties between objects in our daily lives and nature. My art exists in the space between abstraction and representation, offering a visual language that invites exploration.

I strive to inspire a dialogue between the artwork and the viewer, awakening the imagination, evoking personal memories, and encouraging freedom of interpretation. Each person who looks at a painting forms a unique and intimate connection with it, making the artwork “alive” and part of an ongoing conversation.

03

The Meaning Behind My Work

I believe that a painting "talks" only when someone is looking at it. It is an evolving conversation between the viewer, the artwork, and the artist, where everyone contributes their own stories. This is why I am reluctant to give titles to my works—every title acts as a road sign, leading to a predetermined destination rather than allowing open-ended interpretation.

My goal is to create pieces that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and engage with the emotions and stories within the painting.

Background and Influences

Gabija Steponėnaitė was born and raised in Vilnius, Lithuania. She holds a Master of Arts degree in Communication and Western European Literature from Vilnius University.

After moving to the United States over twenty years ago, she discovered her passion for painting and developed her skills in watercolour at the studio of renowned artist Ed Hinkley in Chicago. She describes her creative process as “My colour game,” where each watercolour becomes a unique expression of a fleeting moment or emotion.

Nature, city life, and especially water—memories of Lake Michigan—play a vital role in her artistic inspiration.
